Preparing Your Quilt Top

Following these tips will help us ensure your quilt is completed beautifully and without delay.

  1. Quilt top should be ironed and free of excess threads on the "right" side of the quilt top.

    • During quilting, we will do our best to trim stray threads on the quilt top, but if it disrupts the quilting process, they may be left and quilted in.

    • The underside of the quilt top does not need thorough trimming, but please ensure no thread nests or knots are present which could disrupt the machine or create lumps within the finished quilt.

  2. Square up your quilt top.

    • Lay your quilt top out and make sure that it can lay flat without folds or puckering. A uniform, sqare quilt top will help prevent any puckers or tucks from occuring during the quilting process.

  3. If your quilt top does not contain borders, we recommend performing a stay-stitch around the outside of the top.

    • A stay-stich is a single straight-stitch done all around the outside of the quilt top, about 1/16-1/8 inch from the edge. It prevents the piecing from coming apart at the outer seams and helps reduce stretching during quilting. It will be covered by the binding on your finished quilt.

  4. If your quilt is directional, place a safety pin or strip of painter's tape along the edge of the " top" side

    • On the "right" side, not the underside and

    • We will align the quilt in this orientation on the frame.

  5. If you are providing your own batting and backing:

    • Ensure that your backing is square.

      • The backing fabric must be square in order to load into the quilting machine. An additional surchange may be added if we are required to cut and square your backing prior to loading it onto the machine.

    • Batting and backing must be at least 4" wider and longer than your quilt top on all sides. This is required to attach the quilt back to the frame for the quilting process.

      • For Example, a quilt top measuring 60" x 70" should have batting and backing at least 68" x 78".

      • A large backing is easily trimmed, but a backing that is too small is very difficult to correct on the frame. Please err on the larger side when preparing your fabric, and excess backing materials will be returned with your finished quilt for deposit into your fabric stash!

  6. Phew! You're ready!
